New Stage of Cooperation Development between PSU and Juraj Dobrila University of Pula (Croatia): Beginning of Croatian Language Learning at Pyatigorsk State University

Новый этап развития сотрудничества ПГУ и Университета Пулы им. Юрая Добрилы (Хорватия): начало изучения хорватского языка в Пятигорском государственном университете
The 2020/2021 academic year saw an important event at Pyatigorsk State University: students, majoring in 44.03.05 – Pedagogic Education (with two profiles: Russian Language and Literature) started learning Croatian under the guidance of Professor Irena Mikulaco, Doctor of Philological Sciences. The classes take place online using the Zoom platform and webinar system of edu.pgu. The professionalism of a lecturer and hard work of students have already given the first positive results: at the end of the semester, all students gained elementary skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Croatian language teaching has an interesting story behind it.

Several years ago, Professor A.P. Gorbunov, Rector of PSU put a new task of broadening PSU’s international activity and establishing cooperation with Slavonic European countries. In 2016, the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula in Croatia held the II International Conference “Multilingualism and Intercultural Communication: Challenges of the 21st Century”, and representatives of PSU Associate Professor I.B. Fedotova, and Associate Professor N.A. Orlova took part in the event to offer cooperation between two universities on behalf of the PSU administration.

That was a starting point of interesting and fruitful cooperation between Pyatigorsk State University and Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, which opened the Pushkin Institute – Center of Russian Language and Literature in 2017. The ceremonious opening was visited by PSU Rector Profesor A.P. Gorbunov, Professor V.E. Mishin, Head of the Department of International Relations and Educational Programs, and Associate Professor I.B. Fedotova, Head of the Pushkin Institute. The active collaboration began: joint organization and negotiation of the conferences, presentations, participation of Croatian delegation in the 80th anniversary of the university, development of the Erasmus+ program, work in the field of Russian language, Russian literature, and Croatian language.  This direction was inspired by the chairwoman of the Croatian Association of Teachers of Russian Languages and Literature, head of the Pushkin Institute at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, Professor Irena Mukulaco, a talented scholar, perfect organizer, a real expert of the Russian language, a high-qualified specialist in Croatian language teaching, whose activity is widely supported by the administration and teaching staff of the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula. The administration of PSU navigates this work, support it in all kinds, and offers new initiatives: at present, the Center of Croatian Language and Culture is prepared for the ceremonious opening. Its design reflects the history of Croatia, its world achievements, and culture. The beginning of the Croatian language teaching marked the start of the Center’s work in an academic schedule.

The events mentioned show that Pyatigorsk State University continues strengthening its international status as a center of diversity of languages and cultures, broadening the partner network and foreign friendship relations, and opening the world for its students while transforming it.
